The beginnings of Krzysztof Skórczewski`s work are connected with a linocut. It is the linocut he scored his early successes with. He was dealing with it up till a breakthrough in 1976 when he undertook a long shot of a radical change. From that time he espoused his future with copperplate engraving. The moment of the metamorphosis of the artist seems to be more important as there was not his only departure from the past workshop and relevant stylistics but that time it was a thorough change of graphic narrative and also a runnung to a deeper level of artist`s own personality.
Certainly one should pay more attention to that metamorphosis of the artist. All the more that discovering of his unknown visage was helped by iconographic revolution which broadened possibilities of imaging and which triggerd the artist`s imagination. Skórczewski was shocking with his new works which one could not retale to his earlier ones. He exchanged large format, dynamic, free and expressively dense linocuts for precisely drawn, detailed miniatures and he switched language of abstraction for figurative depiction with eleborate narrative. More and more provoking visions, conceiving possibility of polisemic interpretations, were created step by step. Now when we can commune with artist`s multiannual works it is easier to notice the consciously constructed programme which did not contest his earlier accomplishments but enriched them with unknown aspects. The programme allowed the artist to grow up as an artist-narrator, a creator of an intriguing plot whose visage had been secret and hidden behind a curtain until then (Homo sum, 1972). That was the moment of birth of a new artist who commanded, unknown to him earlier, means of self-presentation. For years to come Krzysztof Skórczewski had been baring his self.
